Jouer la mouette

The company Vol Plané’s troupe comes together to stage Chekhov’s play, The Seagull. Behind this attempt lie the artists’ aspirations and their desire for change. Two generations of artists come together to try to stage The Seagull. In this famous work by Chekhov, Treplev is preparing to present the play he has written for Nina, with whom he is madly in love, before his mother Arkadina, a famous actress, and her lover Trigorin, a successful author. For one evening, the audience is invited to take part in the festivities and share the troupe’s questions about what unites and separates them in this project. Indeed, staging The Seagull means entering a world in decline in which the characters and artists oscillate between frustration and indignation. Each one seeks, in their own way, to give meaning to life despite the lack of prospects. This play is a mise en abyme of theater within theater. Amid unexpected outbursts and attempts to hold on, reality and fiction become intertwined. Music, ever-present, will allow them to speak beyond words and tell of our faith in what comes after.
