Mardis de l'histoire "Le Front populaire, de l'Espagne à la Provence et Marseille, de 1936 à 1938"

Join us at the Marseille History Museum (MHM) for the conference “The Popular Front, from Spain to Provence and Marseille, 1936 to 1938”. This conference will bring the French and Spanish Popular Fronts into dialogue. The latter will be analyzed against the European context of the 1930s and the situation prevailing in Spain since the proclamation of a republican regime in 1931, faced with growing violence in the public sphere. Studying the actors and power dynamics clashing during 1936 will allow us to examine the role of Spanish left-wing parties, both reformist and revolutionary, in shaping policy before the outbreak of the Civil War in July 1936. In France, the Popular Front was an event that uniquely combined a social movement of unprecedented scale, a political project that brought together all the country's left-wing forces, , and an unprecedented governmental experience. This was in response to the economic crisis which, since 1929, had brought recession and unemployment everywhere, and to the political crisis caused by forces and movements claiming, to varying degrees, to be fascist and Nazi...
