For this third year of collaboration with several heritage organizations in the Luberon, near Montagne de Lure, Frac Sud presents a constellation of works from its collection and by invited local artists. Taking the form of a trail, the exhibition Contemporary Odyssey 3 takes root on the earth in order to carry us to the sky, exploring the invisible and attempting to map infinity. The municipalities of Manosque, Ongles, Saint-Maime and Vachères possess an exceptional heritage, partly preserved in their various museums, each with its own distinctive character: the archaeological, paleontological, mining and migratory dimensions linked to the history of these places are all highlighted. Geographically close to one another, many of them lie along the Heritage Trails, forming a route through this preserved territory where the third edition of Contemporary Odyssey unfolds. Comprising a selection of contemporary works from the Frac Sud collection and works borrowed from artists based in the region, the exhibition is conceived as an expedition combining heritage and contemporary creation. Forming a galaxy connecting these four museums, the works offer visitors the chance to leave solid ground and rise toward the sky and its stars, explore the invisible and attempt to measure infinity. Mapping, observing, erasing, fragmenting: these are some of the gestures adopted by the artists, recalling those of astronomers attempting to describe a constantly expanding universe. Between scientific exploration and cosmic reverie, the artists invite us to follow imaginary constellations and cross landscapes that are sometimes familiar, sometimes disorienting. Ancient myths, popular stories and contemporary visions intersect to offer another reading of the world, in which a dialogue emerges between the natural and cosmic forces surrounding us. In resonance with the Luberon’s heritage sites, Contemporary Odyssey 3 proposes a journey that is both scientific and spiritual, in which collective and personal memories collide. Each person can then rethink their place in a cosmos that is both near and light-years away. In a celestial adventure like this, it is not unusual to lose one’s way. To find the route again, a map is available throughout the trail. It contains explanations and drawn fragments taken from the works, to collect and arrange in orbit around each planet representing each museum.
