Puccini : Tosca

Opening concert of the Festival Voix des SudsThe opera is the place of every excess, from the vilest to the noblest. Puccini borrows from Victorien Sardou, twenty-seven years his senior, this colourful trio: the flamboyant and terribly jealous female artist, the artist-painter lover sympathetic to progressive ideas, and the sly, lustful yet all-powerful enforcer of a totalitarian repressive regime. These passions will lead our unfortunate protagonists to the Castel Sant’Angelo in Rome, on the banks of the Tiber, a remnant of the mythical Lethe, that sad river of oblivion in which those who lived are swallowed up…As the Abbey of Saint-Victor is not a lyric theatre, Giacomo Puccini’s Tosca will be presented in an intimate version centred on the three characters involved: Tosca, Mario and Scarpia. The action will retain its fluid plausibility through the presence of a narrator who will link the various scenes. An opera adapted to the venue without betraying its dramatic intensity. After the success of Suor Angelica at the 2025 festival, the Opera returns to Saint-Victor with a production enhanced by the Abbey’s vaulted ceilings.
