The European Heritage Days take place on the third weekend of September. They shed particular light on an original, innovative aspect of heritage through a national theme and encourage unprecedented openings and remarkable activities. The European Heritage Days: exceptional encounters with heritage Created in 1984 under the name “Open Days at Historic Monuments” by the Ministry of Culture, the European Heritage Days aim to show as many people as possible the extraordinary richness of our heritage through new events, unusual tours and exceptional openings. The best way to protect heritage is to make it known and ensure that people can access it. Every year, millions of visitors of all ages gather for the European Heritage Days and cross the threshold of exceptional places and buildings that are usually closed to the general public. The 2026 edition of the European Heritage Days For their 43rd edition, the European Heritage Days will take place on Saturday, September 19 and Sunday, September 20, 2026, with the theme “photographic heritage.” These days offer the opportunity to visit monuments and sites that are often exceptionally open to the public. Starting Friday, September 18, schoolchildren will be able to take part in the “Raise Your Eyes!” initiative, in partnership with the Ministry of Education. This popular event gives the public an opportunity to talk with heritage professionals and discover their knowledge and expertise. The Ministry of Culture, its partners, the City of Marseille and the Tourist Office are joining forces to give everyone the opportunity to meet, share, learn and marvel together.
