Everything takes place far from Moscow, on the estate of old Sorine, a retired magistrate. His nephew, the young Constantin, lives there with him. He is in love with a pretty young woman, Nina, and dreams of literary glory. But his mother, the famous actress Arkadina, who refuses to grow old, leaves him to languish in the countryside without money. She lives the high life in the city, among carriages and telephones, and takes the illustrious naturalist writer Trigorine everywhere with her. Every summer, the couple comes to recuperate at Sorine’s. But that summer, Constantin has written a Symbolist dramatic poem that Nina is to perform. A makeshift theater has been built in the park, and the show will begin in a moment.
