Twenty years later, Anne Théron returns to the convent to revisit Diderot’s The Nun, in a monologue magnificently performed by Marie-Laure Crochant. Gripping. She is nothing and will never be anything: such is the destiny predicted for Suzanne Simonin, locked in a convent to atone for the sin of her illegitimacy, imprisoned by the desire and violence of hysterical mother superiors, confined to an existence she did not choose. Twenty years after her first adaptation of Diderot’s novel, Anne Théron returns to it, choosing to give voice to the monsters that torment Suzanne. Bound in the dress/canvas that envelops and constrains her, Marie-Laure Crochant confronts her demons in a breathless physical struggle that leaves us breathless. Ita missa est. Original text by Anne Théron A monologue freely adapted from The Nun, Denis Diderot’s memoir-novel With Marie-Laure Crochant
