To close the third edition of the Festival Voix des Suds: a work composed in 1958 by Francis Poulenc based on Jean Cocteau’s monologue The Human Voice. This intense work, through the profound fusion of text and music, focuses the audience’s attention on the drama of separation—the torment of this abandoned woman, wounded and devastated by the heartbreak consuming her. The sincere friendship between Poulenc and Cocteau ended with their deaths in 1963. “By a curious mystery, it was only after forty years of friendship that I collaborated with Cocteau. I think I needed a great deal of experience to respect the perfect construction of The Human Voice, which must be, musically, the opposite of an improvisation.” In these words, the composer reflected on his work with the poet.
