Join us at the Museum for the lecture “What Do Plant Names Conceal?”. After a brief dive into botanical history, this lecture invites you to explore the origins of the French, scientific and vernacular names of plants. How were they formed? How many centuries have we been using them? What do they really mean? Egyptian, Latin, Greek, Celtic and other sometimes-forgotten languages intertwine and cross paths to reveal the morphological, ethnological and medicinal subtleties concealed behind plants from here and elsewhere. Plant names are like the depths of the oceans: vast, mysterious and rich in lessons about the plant world. They provide a privileged entry point, intimately connected with human history. By Anne Merry, Lecturer and Botanical Guide Lecture proposed by La Société Linnéenne de Provence • Free • Booking recommended from 3 August: museum-publics@marseille.fr (please specify in your booking request: the number of places—maximum 3—, your telephone number and postcode)
