Beware of men who call themselves feminists
“He reads Liv Strömquist. Quotes bell hooks. Gives me The Lesbian Manifesto. He calls himself a feminist. I believe him. He tolerates very little criticism on this subject: I have no right to tell him how to be a feminist. It is daily, long-term work, dating back well before we met. He distrusts other men. He surrounds himself with women. Almost all of them are his lovers. When he acts in a resolutely sexist manner, I perceive it, but the information that D. is a feminist dissociates me from it. The lie, stated and claimed, prevails over the observation of the facts. Words thwart perception. Their imperative force cuts me off from my lucidity.”
At the heart of a ZAD, behind a burning barricade, a man bursts into tears in my arms. He calls himself a revolutionary; I know myself to be romantic… For me, a slow slide toward control and denial begins at once.
This discussion about my book Beware of Men Who Call Themselves Feminists, Journal of Control—Riposte, published by Éditions du Seuil, will take us to the heart of a literary, poetic and striking case report. It will address domestic violence in activist circles, with testimonies and exhibits.
