Contrechamp at the Cinéma Les Variétés: where theatre and documentary meet in Marseille. Launched through a partnership between the Théâtre du Gymnase-Bernardines and the Cinéma Les Variétés in Marseille, the Contrechamp series aims to build bridges between the performing arts and the art of film. In this context, film-concerts and special screenings in Marseille take on a committed and distinctive form. From its very first session, this cultural event rooted in the Bouches-du-Rhône tackles a subject that is as difficult as it is necessary: infanticide, its present-day realities and its representations, which remain largely taboo in public life. A powerful documentary to inform the theatrical creation of Médée(s). Directed by Sofia Fischer in 2024, Mères à perpétuité draws on testimony from mothers, lawyers and psychiatrists to present an unflinching portrait of a complex reality that is still rarely addressed. This documentary is more than just a film: it is part of the material stage director Louise Vignaud drew on to write Médée(s), her reinterpretation of the mythological figure. The discussion will be hosted by playwright Matéo Mavromatis, ensuring an in-depth exchange between cinema, theatre and contemporary questions. Rachida Brakni is expected to attend, subject to confirmation.
