Join us in Salle le Miroir for a study day organized by the Musée d'Arts Africains, Océaniens et Amérindiens - MAAOA and the TELEMMe laboratory (Cnrs AMU).

Organized by the TELEMMe laboratory (Cnrs AMU) and the MAAOA (Marseille Museums) as part of the Exocmed network, this study day aims to bring together researchers, curators and enthusiasts to analyze the role of women in the history of collecting antiquities and non-European objects, a historiographical field long dominated by male figures. The aim is to analyze the specific role of these women in the circulation and heritage-making of non-European cultural objects during the pivotal period spanning the late 19th century and the first half of the 20th century.

Focusing on the career of Helena Rubenstein (1872-1965), recognized as a major figure in the history of so-called primitive arts, the presentations will seek to bring forgotten personalities to light (Jeanne Burat…) and document previously unpublished collections (numismatics, Persian carpets...). By examining the history of collections through the lens of gender studies, the day will assess the visibility and impact of these women as collectors, dealers or patrons. The discussions will be structured around several methodological approaches: the critical examination of sources and archival collections, the mapping of social networks, and the identification of acquisition strategies. The political dimension of these practices will also be addressed, considering women’s collecting not only as a vehicle for activism, but also as an instrument of intellectual and social emancipation.

This study day will also examine, in the form of a concluding roundtable, the real or presumed legacy left by these figures for contemporary women collectors.
