Dinosaures de Provence

Visit the Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle de Marseille from September 18, 2026 to May 9, 2027 to discover the exhibition “Dinosaurs of Provence.” Immersive and educational, this exhibition offers a plunge into the world of dinosaurs and Provence 73 million years ago, following the trail of these giants, both large and small, exploring the profession of paleontologist, the history of discoveries and representations, and the environment of our region in bygone times. Thanks to their rich collections, the museums of Marseille and Aix-en-Provence have joined forces to present a remarkable exhibition on a subject where scientific discoveries are constantly being made and public interest is undeniable. The Aix-en-Provence region is world-renowned for its exceptional dinosaur egg deposits, but these are not the only remains these giants left us. Marseille preserves internationally significant fossils collected by Philippe Matheron, the father of Provençal paleontology. As early as 1841, he was responsible for studying the first dinosaur eggs ever discovered, as well as Rhabdodon, a small herbivore from the Cretaceous period described in 1869. From that time onward, and through the most recent excavations, our knowledge of the dinosaurs of Provence has continued to grow. The many eggs, bones, teeth and, most recently, footprints help us better understand how these animals lived before disappearing 65 million years ago.
