About this event
To mark the launch of Extra Ordinary 1, a photo index-book of graphic signs collected by Emmanuel Besse, Formagari is hosting an event exploring the notion of the vernacular. Many of the typefaces featured in Formagari’s catalogue draw inspiration from signs, amateur lettering, letters carved in wood or painted by hand. This interest stems from the search for singular typographic forms, as these often spontaneous and humble creations are full of ingenuity.
The vernacular stands apart from design dogma through its popular, everyday character. It is “architecture without architects,” what often presents itself to us as something “already there.” Many areas of design are now taking an interest in it—perhaps also in response to the rapid and frightening evolution of artificial intelligence. The vernacular, a concept in vogue, is often invoked and sometimes somewhat mishandled. Why not try to reflect on its contours and current interpretations?
The launch of the book Extra Ordinary 1 will be accompanied by two talks. Margaux Darrieus, a doctor of architecture who has written on the subject for AOC and the Pavillon de l’Arsenal, will introduce the notion of the vernacular. This will be followed by a presentation by Alaric Garnier, focusing in particular on his sign painting practice (a rapidly growing craft whose development resonates with the search for authenticity found in practices that identify with the vernacular). The presentations will be followed by an open discussion on contemporary issues related to the broader theme.
