Jozef Van Wissem, minimalist lutenist between Baroque and avant-garde
Born in Maastricht in 1962, Dutch composer Jozef Van Wissem has established himself as a distinctive figure in contemporary music by radically modernizing the image of the lute. Inspired by Baroque composers such as Sylvius Leopold Weiss, he has developed a personal style tinged with neo-Gothic aesthetics and drone music, far removed from the traditional classical repertoire.
His prolific discography includes dozens of solo albums as well as notable collaborations with Jim Jarmusch, including the album American Landscapes (2022) and the award-winning soundtrack for Only Lovers Left Alive, which earned him the Cannes Soundtrack Award 2013. More recently, he released the album The Night Dwells in the Day (2024) and composed the soundtrack for Pierre Creton's film Un Prince.
