Les Detaille, photographes de Marseille (1860-2024), une expo à voir dès le 31 octobre
About this event
The Marseille History Museum is dedicating a major exhibition to the Detaille photography dynasty, three generations who, from 1860 to the present day, have captured the evolution of the city of Marseille and its residents.
Heirs to Nadar, Fernand, Albert and Gérard Detaille created an exceptional body of work documenting life in Marseille, its heritage and its transformations. A unique journey through the visual history of Marseille.
The exhibition “Les Detaille. Photographes de Marseille (1860-2024)” takes visitors on a journey through the city and its history: the Old Port, the Canebière, the markets, urban transformations, major events and the faces of Marseille. Rare and moving images reveal the vitality of a city in constant change, between popular traditions and modernity.
This retrospective also highlights the central role of the Canebière studio, a true hub of photographic creativity and innovation, and reveals the Detaille family’s publishing ambitions: as authors of thirty-seven art books, they helped bring Marseille and Provence to prominence in France and internationally.
With this exhibition, the Marseille History Museum offers the public a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in a century and a half of visual history, at the crossroads of art, memory and family heritage.
Memories and nostalgia: This exhibition traces the history of Marseille through exceptional photographs
Over three generations, Fernand, Albert and Gérard Detaille captured Marseille in hundreds of thousands of photographs. This exhibition at the Marseille History Museum is only the first part and a very small glimpse of their work, but it already allows visitors to delve into the history of Marseille over the past 164 years.
