About this event
LE PRINCE DE MADRID FRANCIS LOPEZ
While visiting Goya’s home, Luis Mariano dreams of portraying the painter of El Escorial. Maurice Lamy, the Châtelet’s new director, commissions Francis Lopez to write a tailor-made operetta. Raymond Vincy, for the dramatic structure, and Jacques Plante, for the lyrics, lend him their support.
Created in 1967 under the direction of Jean-Claude Casadesus, with Luis Mariano, Maria Murano and Janine Ervil, this sumptuous production played to full houses over the course of 553 performances. A royal portraitist, Goya lived like a prince. From 1792 onward, he became deaf and lost his beloved Duchess of Alba, whom he had painted so often. Le Prince de Madrid tells a much lighter story, providing an excuse for lively melodies and sentimental duets. On leaving the Odéon, everyone will be singing: “It is in you that I have chosen / My princess for one night.”
