Les Algériens à Marseille au XXe siècle: entre invisibilité et ancrage

Talk by Céline Regnard, Professor and Head of the History Department at Aix-Marseille Université

About this event

Today, Algerians are the largest foreign-origin group in Marseille’s population. They arrived in the early 20th century in relatively small numbers, and gradually became the most prominent face of immigration in the city. What were their living conditions? What are the main characteristics and stages of their history? These are the questions this talk will address.

Céline Regnard is a historian, Professor at Aix-Marseille Université and a member of the TELEMMe research laboratory. She specializes in the history of Marseille, particularly migration in the contemporary period and the city’s colonial history. She has published numerous books, the most recent of which is En Transit. Les Syriens à Beyrouth, Marseille, Le Havre, NewYork (1880-1914), published in 2020, and coordinated the “Mars Imperium. Histoire et mémoires(post)-coloniales de Marseille” project. She was co-scientific curator of the permanent exhibition at the Mémorial des déportations, “La Mauvaise réputation. Marseille 1900-1943,” which opened in 2024.

For those who have never attended one of the Une histoire de Marseille association’s talks, here’s how it works: in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere, come and discover how Marseille became the city it is today. The aim is to explore the history of the Phocaean city through a presentation illustrated with numerous archival images, followed by a discussion.
