About this event

The Mediterranean Institute of Biodiversity and Marine and Continental Ecology (IMBE) takes an integrative approach to studying biodiversity and socio-ecological systems. IMBE provides fundamental and applied knowledge about the functions and historical and evolutionary dynamics of biodiversity across all types of Mediterranean ecosystems, from the formation of paleo-ecosystems to their future in the context of global change. This work also explores connections with civil society, on the one hand, and human health issues, on the other.

Speaker: Sylvie Thirion, lecturer and researcher at Aix-Marseille University – neuroscientist – Institute of Systems Neuroscience – president of ValBioMe.

The gut microbiome, made up of billions of microorganisms, plays a key role in our health. Digestion, immunity, metabolism, and communication with the brain: these invisible inhabitants contribute to many aspects of our body’s balance. In light of recent scientific advances, we will explore their roles, the effects of imbalances and current research avenues for influencing the microbiome, from diet to therapeutic interventions. We will see how this rapidly expanding field of research is reshaping our understanding of the connection between the body and the environment, and what issues it raises for prevention and the medicine of tomorrow.
