Philosophers occupy a singular space in the public sphere, between the transmission of knowledge, self-staging and the circulation of ideas on media platforms.

About this event

At a time when scholarly speech is disseminated in increasingly fast, short and personalized formats, is philosophy still an authentic exercise in thought, or is it tending to become one form among others of visibility and support? What does the figure of the philosopher owe to contemporary influencer dynamics? Presence, the creation of a signature, the relationship with the public, the stylization of discourse… philosophical speech is certainly no longer confined to the very specific charisma of a philosophy teacher winning over their students. From Deleuzian “pop philosophy” to its contemporary digital avatars, thought has become more mobile, more widely circulated and sometimes more desirable. The question remains what it still has to gain, risk and defend in the 21st century. Martin Legros is editor-in-chief and co-founder of Philosophie Magazine. A fellow traveler of Pop Philosophy, he will lead this open discussion about the future of Pop Philo with Françoise Gaillard and Francesco Masci.

Organized by: PLACE PUBLIQUE

Les Rencontres Place Publique, created in 1994 by Jacques Serrano, initially brought together French and foreign intellectuals to invite them to activate, within the field of art, the systems of thought specific to their disciplines—sociology, philosophy—and are considered by many intellectuals and art-world professionals to be the most relevant moments for reflection on art in France today. Counter to popularization, and in favor of dissemination, they have always prioritized intellectual rigor, in a spirit of pleasure.

Based in Marseille, Les Rencontres Place Publique have been invited in particular to Columbia University New York, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, the Palais de Tokyo, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, the Institut National d’Histoire de l’Art (Paris), and the Musée d’Art Contemporain de Montréal, thus giving Marseille and its region international visibility in the field of artistic thought.

La Semaine de la Pop Philosophie, created in 2009, is an event whose aim is to enable philosophical explorations based on iconoclastic objects from popular and media culture, and which also seeks to foster innovation in formats for intellectual exchange.
