A two-part chronicle, Le Chagrin et la Pitié is an exceptional documentary. Using international archival footage and testimonies collected in the Clermont-Ferrand region and around the world, its makers offer a previously unseen vision of Collaboration and the Resistance. While genuine resistance fighters are present, the film gives collaborators and militiamen a voice for the first time. Above all, it paints a picture of the everyday cowardice and common compromises of a large part of the population.
