Mayotte Maore, la rencontre des mondes

The exhibition « Mayotte Maore, la rencontre des mondes », presented at the Mucem by the MuMA – Musée de Mayotte, explores the archaeology, history and cultures—traditional and contemporary—of Mayotte, an Indian Ocean territory shaped by multiple cultural influences for more than a thousand years.

At the heart of the project, an immersive film about intangible cultural heritage offers access to Mahoran languages, musical and choreographic practices, rituals and forms of social interaction. Serving as the exhibition’s guiding thread, it gives voice to residents and reveals what cannot be displayed in a showcase.

Created through collaboration among researchers, artists, cultural organizations and the Mahoran diaspora, particularly in Marseille, the exhibition fully reflects the Mucem’s mission: to offer a renewed perspective on Mayotte, affirmed as a living territory of culture, creativity and thought.
