Princesse Czardas
About this event
The Csárdás Princess is the nickname of a cabaret singer who has all of Budapest running after her. Prince von Liebensdorf is deeply in love with her, but his father does not approve. Their romance is thwarted until the happy ending.
PRINCESSE CZARDAS EMMERICH KÁLMÁN
Premiered in Vienna in 1915, Princesse Czardas was composed in two stages. First in 1914 in Marienbad, where the Hungarian composer and his two librettists had gathered. The war interrupted their work, which resumed in summer 1915 in Bad Ischl.
Its success was immediate. The Paris premiere took place in 1930. The celebrated couple Merkès and Merval made it one of their signature works. The Csárdás Princess is the nickname of a cabaret singer who has all of Budapest running after her. Prince von Liebensdorf is deeply in love with her, but his father does not approve. Their romance is thwarted until the happy ending. Settled in Paris, where he died, Emmerich Kálmán was given the infamous title of “honorary Aryan” in the 1930s, which he politely declined. All the more reason to sing together, “Hurray! Hurray!”
