The city is not built solely through plans, buildings and development projects. It is also built through stories and urban memory: the memory of places, spaces, their uses and their heritage designation, as well as the memories of residents. There are memories that are passed on and others that are forgotten.

Which stories help bring a place into existence? Who has the power to tell the story of the city, preserve certain memories and render others invisible? And how do these stories influence the ways in which territories are transformed, inhabited or preserved?

For this conference, Nouvelles Trames proposes bringing together two perspectives and two territories: documentary and sound creation, and architecture and urban planning, in Seine-Saint-Denis and Marseille and its surrounding area. By putting their practices into dialogue, Myriam Rabah Konaté and Susanne Otto will examine the role of stories and memories in the transformation of territories, from the stories experienced and passed on by residents to those produced by urban professionals.

. Myriam Rabah Konaté: Author, dancer and sound documentarian, Myriam Rabah Konaté explores, in particular, the links between memory, territory and intimate and collective narratives. Her documentary work, including two podcasts made in Seine-Saint-Denis about the memories that run through this territory, gives voice to experiences that often remain outside institutional urban narratives.

. Susanne Otto: An architect and urban planner and co-manager of the Marseille agency TDSO, Susanne Otto brings the perspective of a practitioner involved in transforming territories.

How are existing narratives taken into account in urban projects? How can a project work with the memories of a place, its uses and the representations associated with it? And what new stories does urban transformation itself help produce?

By bringing these two approaches together, we will ask who tells the story in an urban project, what is left out or erased, and how other voices bring new shared narratives to the fore.
