Tarnation is the contraction, in Texan slang, of “Eternal” and “Damnation”: eternal hell. The hell experienced by Jonathan Caouette, born in 1972 in Houston, Texas. The director has filmed his life since the age of 11, using snippets from amateur Super 8 films, messages recorded on an answering machine and video footage to portray an American family shattered by multiple crises. It is the story of society’s outcasts.
