Toi c'est moi

Across a period

About this event

You may be wondering where the droll and exotic song “Sous les palétuviers,” immortalized by Pauline Carton and the good André Berley, comes from. Look no further! It comes from the operetta Toi c’est moi, Moisés Simóns’ first success.

TOI C’EST MOI MOISÉS SIMÓNS

You may be wondering where the droll and exotic song “Sous les palétuviers,” immortalized by Pauline Carton and the good André Berley, comes from. Look no further! It comes from the operetta Toi c’est moi, Moisés Simóns’ first success.

The work was a huge hit at the Bouffes Parisiens. The libretto is by Henri Duvernois (in Duvernois, I am me and perhaps you), and the lyrics are by Albert Willemetz, to whom we owe Phi-Phi, Là-Haut and “Félicie aussi.” A Cuban composer of Basque origin, Simóns settled in Paris before being arrested by the Nazis, who believed he was Jewish. Sent to a concentration camp, he emerged from it emaciated in 1942, before dying at the end of the war.

The story is not very funny, but it wisely reminds us that the strongest gaiety often comes from overcoming the worst hardships.
