Residency showing Aquilomba Company A circus exploration of ancestral memory and the Black Atlantic Following the success of her creation MACACADA, artist Maïra de Oliveira Aggio presents a research-and-creation stage of her new project: “Desafogadas – non-drowned – undrowned.” Loosely inspired by the work of Alexis Pauline Gumbs, this project features four racialized performers from the Global South. Together, they summon the ancestral memory of marine mammals through the lens of the Black Atlantic, questioning our deep connections with the living world. At the heart of this creation: A unique aerial apparatus: a huge 10 x 6-meter hammock made from caroá (a traditional fiber from Brazil’s Caatinga). A political and artistic gesture: By using this ancestral technology, the show denounces the environmental racism affecting the Caatinga biome, while turning the hammock into a space for care, enfolding and transmission. This residency showing invites you to discover an organic circus research project in which the body, matter and decolonial thought intertwine to come to the surface.
