About this event

A circus exploration of ancestral memory and the Black Atlantic

Following the success of her creation MACACADA, artist Maïra de Oliveira Aggio presents the research and creation stage of her new project: “Desafogadas – non-noyées – undrowned”.

Loosely inspired by the work of Alexis Pauline Gumbs, this project features four racialized performers from the Global South. Together, they summon the ancestral memory of marine mammals through the lens of the Black Atlantic, questioning our deep connections with the living world.

At the heart of this creation:

An unprecedented aerial apparatus: a huge 10 x 6 metre hammock, made from caroá (a traditional fibre from Brazil’s Caatinga region). A political and artistic gesture: Through the use of this ancestral technology, the performance denounces the environmental racism affecting the Caatinga biome, while turning the hammock into a space for care, enfolding and transmission. This residency presentation invites you to discover an organic circus research project in which the body, matter and decolonial thought intertwine to rise to the surface.
