September 27, 2026 Archipel 49, 49 rue Chape, 13004 Marseille From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Take part in the Voix de la Canebière singing workshop and discover Georgian polyphony with L'Ensemble Marani! Presentation of the artists and program: Marani, meaning “wine cellar” in Georgian, a name that evokes both the richness and depth of this musical heritage. With Giorgi Davitashvili (Artistic Director), Salomé Kvaratskhelia, Raia Dragneva, David Kveselava, Bertrand Lambolez, Bernard Odot, Sandro Sherozia, Irakli Sulukhia, Pierluigi Tomasi, Boris Godot, Hugues Roose, Elias Fisch, Vladimir Fagianelli L’ Ensemble Marani powerfully embodies the continuity of a major intangible heritage. In Georgia, polyphonic singing accompanies the community at every moment of life: wedding and funeral ceremonies, healing rituals, liturgy, work, lullabies, dances and banquets (the “supra”). These songs have different characteristics depending on their regional origins. Polyphonic singing is practiced by both women and men, but the male repertoire is much broader. The practice is traditionally passed on orally, within the family and community. Today, many singers try to come as close as possible to this method of transmission by learning directly from singing masters (“lotbari”). This is the case in Île-de-France with L'Ensemble Marani, which has made several study trips to Georgia and invited numerous Georgian singing masters. L'Ensemble Marani will perform the previous day, Saturday, September 26, as part of the De Vives Voix festival, at Archipel 49.
