—— (COM)POSITION-COM... —— Workshop on September 19 and 20, 2026 with Chloé Saffores, in Marseille at Chant du Voisin! A theoretical and practical workshop at the crossroads of improvisation/choreography/dramaturgy. —— (COM)POSITION-COM... —— We will explore Real-Time Composition (RTC), a tool for training attention in support of ongoing research I am conducting into decision-making in the asymmetrical power relations in which we are connected and interdependent, consent and risk in improvisation, in composing a situation, and in the experience of listening, looking and touching. How can we take a position with others, with the things that inhabit and pass through me, and with the others with whom I inhabit and move through the world? How can I participate in a situation that I witness and that affects me, support it, transform it, receive and offer resources without making myself vulnerable? Let us (re)start with an RTC workshop. —— What? —— Real-Time Composition (RTC) is a research field and practice developed by Portuguese artist-researcher João Fiadeiro for around twenty years; it is a tool for exploring forms of dramaturgical writing, and today a point of convergence between the arts, science and everyday life. RTC is a game in its collective form, with precise rules, constraints and principles to accept and experiment with. In this playful framework, we focus on the process: how to collaborate, how to bring shared elements into being, how to inhabit a situation and an event together. What is at work in RTC is the relationship; agency goes beyond the individual and passes through them. What dances is our attention. By practicing RTC as a game, we train attentional and decision-making virtuosity; we learn to disengage from our habits, suspend our reactions, “become a thing,” transform and grieve, influence the game through our simple presence-absence, become aware of it and take care of our affective weavings again and again. —— How? —— Several setups have been created for practicing it. Some ways of practicing RTC engage the body in space and therefore sometimes involve touch, while others involve objects on a table and do not require participants to expose themselves. Sometimes the work uses images and words; sometimes microphones are used. In all cases, participants work with rules, principles and a vocabulary. In all cases, no particular skills are needed to play. Important: this method is often perceived as “cerebral”; it requires concentration and specific, demanding engagement in analysis and feedback on the practice—for your enjoyment! —— For whom? —— This workshop is aimed both at artists wishing to immerse themselves in the potential of a transdisciplinary theoretical and practical tool and at anyone curious to practice communicating viewpoints, seeing and translating connections between things—in short, anyone interested in ways of relating and thinking together about how to inhabit spaces collectively. The workshop is in French, with full translation into English possible. Initially a central subject and then a tool applied in service of current creative research, RTC will be studied and used as a backbone throughout this cycle, and will gradually enter into dialogue with various other improvisation practices. TBA —— Bio —— Chloé Saffores performs, teaches, directs and studies with a strong taste for risk, non-knowledge, persistence, play and experimentation, working to make room for problems and asymmetries. After working as a performer, earning a degree in Psychology and a Master's degree in Arts, specializing in “Dance Improvisation” (Université Côte d’Azur, 2021), they took part in the PACAP5 program (Forum Dança, 2022) to deepen their study of João Fiadeiro's Real-Time Composition, which they have since taught in France. With MYOB (Mind Your Own Business) and at la ChaleurUmaine (a venue located on the Larzac plateaus), Chloé conspires and co-facilitates improvisation research laboratories. In their choreographic projects, methods and setups, they work with the fragility and rigor of authoritative and authorizing frameworks, studying the anticipation of the gaze and the training of attention. Supported by eco-trans*feminist somactivist thinkers and practices, their current research project is called Jeu A.
