Ubu (Roi)

As it approaches its thirty-fifth anniversary, the Badaboum theatre is delighted to continue offering performances for all ages, including the very youngest. A performance based on Alfred Jarry for children aged 5 and up. Running time: 50 min. Ubu is a happy man. He loves eating, sleeping and, of course, keeping King Venceslas company, whose loyal officer he is. But one day, Mother Ubu suggests another plan: why not take King Venceslas’s place and become king himself? Aided by Captain Bordure, Father Ubu soon gets his way. But how far will he go? Jarry uncompromisingly criticizes an authoritarian world that we easily recognize, but never gives in to darkness. Instead, he offers us a colorful, exhilarating farce, written in a spirited and thunderous language—a truly singular play. By my green candle, yes indeed, I am happy. One would be happy with less: captain of dragons, trusted officer of King Venceslas, decorated with the Order of the Red Eagle of Poland and former King of Aragon—what more could you want?
