The “Control | Emancipation: the social uses of photography” meetings bring together artists, researchers and students to question the place of photography in the production of knowledge in the human and social sciences, from its historical uses to its most contemporary forms. Two complementary sections will each consist of two study days: the first in Strasbourg, focused on photography as a vehicle for emancipation, and the second in Marseille, devoted to photography as an instrument of control. This duality is viewed not as a strict opposition, but as the two sides of the same dynamic of photography’s social uses. These meetings combine scientific, artistic and historical interests in photography and its practitioners by encouraging cooperation between laboratories, art centers and higher-education institutions, with a view to pooling resources and sharing expertise. By incorporating participatory formats and hybrid approaches (meetings, workshops, exhibitions), they seek to broaden the traditional forms of study days. Intended for researchers, artists, students and citizens, they also aim to create an interdisciplinary space for dialogue in which academic knowledge, artistic practices and sensory experiences enrich one another. A project in partnership with LinCS (University of Strasbourg), IDEAS (Aix-Marseille University), Frac Sud, Centre Photographique Marseille, HEAR (Haute École des Arts du Rhin), InSituLab, La Chambre, Stimultania, La Fabrique des Écritures Ethnographiques, SUAC (University Cultural Action Service of the University of Strasbourg)
