Is the melody of Brahms’s Variations on a Theme by Haydn really by Haydn? We don’t know. What matters is that it is Brahms’s first symphonic masterpiece.

The Symphony No. 102, on the other hand, is indeed by Haydn; it is one of the last “London” symphonies and one of the most successful. Schumann’s Fourth was his second symphony, but it was unsuccessful. Reworked ten years later, it was a smash hit. And it still makes a hit today.
