CONCERT DE l'ORCHESTRE PHILHARMONIQUE DE MARSEILLE TRAGIQUE

Symphony concert

Of his two symphonic overtures, Brahms said: “One laughs, the other cries.” The Tragic Overture is the one that cries. In great torrents. Written in the dark key of D minor, it is marked by the theme of fate.

Composed in 1943, Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 8 is one of the Soviet composer’s finest works. Called “tragic” by the Russians, it is in C minor like Beethoven’s Fifth, to which it pays tribute, and it is deeply moving.
