About this event

DEBUSSY | BONIS | TURINA | ... Florilège! What better name for this assortment of distinctive pieces, chosen for their originality and diversity?

Chamber music concert in the intimate setting of the foyer of the Marseille Opera House.

To begin, two women composers: Mel Bonis (1858–1937), the most prolific French composer of chamber music of the early 20th century, and her British contemporary Madeleine Dring (1923–1977), influenced both by Poulenc and Gershwin. To continue, the traditional Andalusian music of Joaquin Turina, and that of the Italian Saverio Mercadante, overshadowed by the competition of the rising star Giuseppe Verdi. Another French composer featured in this program is Jacques Ibert (1890–1962), whose Interludes illustrate the clarity and elegance of French music. Three arranged pieces will follow, small poetic gems drawn from film, cartoon and ballet music, composed by Dmitri Shostakovich. Not forgetting Claude Debussy's celebrated Arabesque No. 1, which, along with No. 2, ranks among the earliest works of Impressionist music in France. To close the program, the spirited Rigaudon, the fourth piece in Maurice Ravel's piano suite Le Tombeau de Couperin, written in memory of his friends who fell in battle during the First World War.
