Ennio Morricone and Nino Rota: two giants of film music
Ennio Morricone, born in Rome in 1928 and deceased in 2020, is considered one of the most important figures in 20th-century film composition. Trained at Rome's Santa Cecilia Conservatory, he rose to prominence in the 1960s through his collaboration with director Sergio Leone. Among other honors, he won an Oscar for Best Original Score in 2016 for The Hateful Eight.
His musical style is distinguished by a unique blend of lyrical melody and unconventional sounds—whistles, a whip, bells, voices—which gave him an unmistakable sound identity. The author of more than 500 scores for film and television, he also received an Honorary Oscar in 2007, three Golden Globes and a Grammy Award for his life's work.
