About this event

Editorial

The LFKs-Jean Michel Bruyère collective has occupied a workshop, Les Cathédrales, at La Friche Belle de Mai since 2006. “The place is hybrid, quickly familiar, hard to describe,” wrote Rachid Laïreche in an article published in Libération in August 2025. The article was about Sup de Sub, a neighborhood higher education school, an initiative run by LFKs from 2019 to 2025, with the workshop as a central venue. (Videodrome 2 partnered with Sup de Sub, hosting many screenings for its students.) In the LFKs workshop, a place for work and creation, Sup de Sub students created and shared their work, attended classes, and recorded Twitch broadcasts, all among the LFKs collective’s works, installed and moved around… Everyone who had the chance to spend time in this workshop shared Rachid Laïreche’s feeling: it was a good place to be—alert, amused and moved, surprised and astonished, alive. It is hard to describe, indeed: that is the nature of beauty—to be indescribable. What made this vast storage floor in a former factory beautiful? Was it because this beauty had turned bitter, or because someone had wanted to insult it? In any case, we must speak of it in the past tense. The LFKs collective is leaving La Friche (and we will tactfully say that this is not entirely the collective’s doing). An exhibition of the collective’s works is on at La Friche from October 24 to December 13, 2026. At Videodrome 2, we are showing three films by the collective, made as part of three of these initiatives.

RELAPSE, Et la guerre revient toujours

by the LFKs Collective | 2022 | France | 2h45

Relapse is a feature film made by LFKs for and with the students in the second cohort at the two Sup de Sub campuses—Mark Hubbard (Issa Samb campus and Jean-Paul Curnier campus). It was shot over five weeks between March and April 2022 in the Morvan, Marseille, and Santa Severa, Corsica. Begun on the first day of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the film invokes Joan of Arc and various legendary figures of heroism and commitment. Through original texts and excerpts from various works (Colette Beaune, Simone de Beauvoir, René Char, Marcel Cohen, Che Guevara, Roger Gilbert-Leconte, Pierre Guyotat…), it evokes war entering people’s daily lives and the martyrs, and recalls the ties between war and belief. Relapse (2h40, black and white and color) was shown at MC93, the national theater of Seine-Saint-Denis in Bobigny, in an initial edit in May 2022, then in Marseille at the Gyptis cinema in May 2023, and at the Théâtre national de la Criée as part of the Festival de Marseille on July 1, 2023. During filming and post-production, students from both campuses were invited to get involved and contribute as much as they wanted, in every role (dialogue, acting, camera, sound, lighting, makeup, costumes, sets, music, post-synchronization, sound post-production…). LFKs designed the film’s structure both to incorporate these initiatives and to emerge from them.
