About this event

Editorial

Some films are born in a classroom, a community center, a care facility, a prison, a place to live, or a struggle. In no time at all, from writing to editing, these films made by many hands give rise to hybrid forms shaped by spontaneity. They look like nothing else we usually see, and they are the ones we want to champion. The Cinéma Siba collective is launching the first edition of the Les films de barbarie festival, dedicated to workshop films and collaborative creation. Siba, in Moroccan Darija, means what escapes control: we believe in it, for films as much as for workshops. We put it at the heart of our filmmaking practice and, with unique groups, make films together that we would never have made alone. Yet these films remain on the margins of the usual circuits for lack of places to show them. Here is ours: around fifteen short films made in Marseille and the surrounding area, in three screenings at Le Gyptis cinema and Videodrome 2, with the people who made them in attendance. We open with “Cour sur le bitume,” stories about the city and all its moods. The next day, we meet at Shed Publishing to talk about the practice with those who lead workshops. Concrete questions: how can we consider anti-racism and anti-ableism from the very first meeting? How can we create outside institutional frameworks? What place does the female author have in a collective creation? In the evening, two screenings, two directions. “Bismillah c les ténèbres” starts with a Y: four fantastical, dystopian worlds where everything goes awry—watch out for the special effects, handmade, local and preservative-free! Then “Itinéraire bis” brings us to a crossroads: wandering thoughts, an escape in the style of a Western, an arrival in exile, and a final takeoff to another planet we hope is less khene. Thanks to the volunteers and the teams at the venues hosting us and placing their trust in us. We love you.

Bismillah c les ténèbres – short-film program

A flower that should not have been eaten, druids and witches against a multinational corporation, a catastrophe striking Marseille, and a magnetic field laying siege to Belle de Mai, live on its own news channel. In these four worlds spinning out of control, children and teenagers do not stay quietly in their place: they flee toward the horizon, find a way through, or cast a spell. The special effects are improvised, and so is the end of the world. All screenings are preceded by the film from the latest Droit au bus campaign by the Collectif des Habitant es Organisé-es du 3ème arrondissement de Marseille, which is fighting to make the Aix-Marseille metropolitan area’s buses accessible to everyone.
