“No country without farmers,” read a sign during the 2024 demonstrations.
About this event
This exhibition aims to rebuild the connection between the farming world and our contemporaries. To understand the world of French agriculture, we need to go back in time. Over 150 years, it will explore the challenges, achievements, difficulties and trade-union struggles that enabled French agriculture to become, within one generation, one of the most productive in the world. But this performance did not come without costs, human tragedies or opposition, such as rural exodus, the disappearance of rural civilization and the drastic decline in the number of farmers, as well as health and ecological tragedies.
The exhibition will address the transformations of the farming world in the context of globalized agriculture, as well as how it is perceived by the various stakeholders in civil society, with the aim of fostering better understanding and closer ties.
The exhibition will also draw on the Mucem’s rich collections, which account for 74 of the 230 to 250 works and documents.
Works have been specially created for the exhibition and produced by the Mucem: five drawings by press cartoonist GAB, a work by Gaëlle Doret-Bélorgey, and a work by students from the Lycée professionnel agricole la Ricarde in L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, coordinated by artist Nicolas Eres.
