Resistances & Acts of Disobedience invites two artists to create works around the memorial heritage connected to France and Tunisia’s colonial past. Resistances & Acts of Disobedience invites two artists—one French and one Tunisian—to create works around the memorial heritage connected to France and Tunisia’s colonial past, particularly from the imprisonment of Habib Bourguiba, the Tunisian independence leader, between 1939 and 1942 at the Marseille Citadel, then a political prison. The project addresses decolonial and memorial issues through alternative methods of archival collection and digital media, and considers the prison as a place where resistance is constructed. With few archives available, the Citadel combines its heritage with academic research to reconstruct the history, invoking creation to approach the intangible archive and the reappropriation of places of oppression. The works will be presented at the Marseille Citadel and then in Tunis, in connection with the project partners Chroniques—Biennale of Digital Imaginaries and the B7L9 Art Center.
