Œuvre audiovisuelle artistique et immersive : PRÉMICES

Since July 9, a second component of the exhibition “Marseille 1900-1943. The Bad Reputation”: PRÉMICES, an immersive and artistic audiovisual creation. As part of the exhibition “Marseille 1900-1943. The Bad Reputation,” on view since February 9, 2024 at the Mémorial des déportations, a new immersive artistic audiovisual work enriches the exhibition route: PRÉMICES, an ode to the Phocaean city and a lyrical and dreamlike tribute. The exhibition “Marseille 1900-1943. The Bad Reputation” revisits the roots of a tragedy: the roundups at the Opera and the Old Port, and the destruction of the old neighborhoods in 1943, carried out by the Nazi army with the complicity of the Vichy regime. A crime against humanity that forever marked the face of Marseille. If everything was not predetermined, the unthinkable was made possible by a sedimentation of representations and an oppressive imaginary. Marseille was the symbol of political and moral degeneration, an infamous blemish, a ghetto of the poor and foreigners, the embodiment of international criminality that had to be erased from the landscape. PRÉMICES steps back from the events and historical analysis to offer an immersive plunge into images and sounds, in a nomadic journey through cosmopolitan Marseille between the wars and Marseille in the 1990s, seen through the eyes of Jacques Windenberger, Pierre Ciot and Kamar Idir. Filmmakers and photographers expressed a certain fascination with this “crossroads of peoples,” this sultry and underworld atmosphere that attracted and troubled them in equal measure. PRÉMICES: two slide shows and a film essay projected onto the bunker walls, an editing process interweaving excerpts from fiction films (silent and talking), audiovisual archives and contemporary images.
