Œuvre audiovisuelle artistique et immersive : PRÉMICES

As part of the exhibition Marseille 1900-1943. La mauvaise réputation, on view since February 9, 2024 at the Memorial of the Deportations, a new artistic and immersive audiovisual work enriches the exhibition route: PRÉMICES, an ode to the city of Marseille and a lyrical, dreamlike tribute. The exhibition Marseille 1900-1943. La mauvaise réputation revisits the roots of a tragedy: the roundups at the Opera and the Old Port, as well as the destruction of the old neighborhoods in 1943, carried out by the Nazi army with the complicity of the Vichy regime. A crime against humanity that forever marked the face of Marseille. If everything was not predetermined, the unthinkable was made possible by a sedimentation of representations and an overwhelming imaginary. Marseille is the symbol of political and moral degeneration, an infamous blemish, a ghetto of the poor and métèques, the embodiment of international organized crime that must be erased from the landscape. PRÉMICES steps back from the events and historical analysis to offer an immersive plunge into images and sounds, through a nomadic journey in cosmopolitan Marseille between the two world wars and in the 1990s, seen through the eyes of Jacques Windenberger, Pierre Ciot and Kamar Idir. Filmmakers and photographers have testified to a certain fascination with this “crossroads of peoples” and this sultry, shadowy atmosphere that attracts and unsettles them in equal measure. PRÉMICES consists of two slide shows and a film essay projected onto the bunker walls: a montage intertwining excerpts from fiction films (silent and sound), audiovisual archives and contemporary images. Directed by Édouard Mills Affiff, senior lecturer in film studies (Université Paris-Cité/Aix-Marseille Université), documentary filmmaker and director. To ensure that you can enjoy the complete tour of all our exhibition rooms, we invite you to contact the Museum before your visit. All visits and activities related to the exhibition are available on the museums’ website.
