Nour must leave for a distant country to find her mother and a better future. This rite-of-passage journey is carried by dance, spoken words, sign language and object theatre. Nour grows up in the warm arms of Youmna, who is deaf. Together, they speak another language made up of gestures, words, sign language and silences. One day, Nour must leave to join her mother in a distant country where girls can go to school and learn a trade. Before leaving, Youmna entrusts her with a box that she must open one happy day. To support this story, director Marie-Eve Huot plays with scale, combining dance and projected images with object theatre and creating a shared physical vocabulary for the two performers. The show becomes a truly inclusive work, incorporating Deaf culture and even adding a non-auditory dimension to the perception of sound. This crossing, a sensitive gateway to the realities of migration, also speaks of a mother’s extraordinary love for her daughter, separation, the unconscious inheritance we carry within us and the freedom to be.
