Huis Clos

Three characters find themselves together in the same room after their deaths. They are Garcin, a journalist; Inès, a postal worker; and Estelle, a wealthy socialite. They do not know one another, come from very different backgrounds, and share neither the same convictions nor the same tastes. In this room, a closed-door trial begins, in which each of the three characters judges—and is judged for—the acts that make up their existence. Here, Jean-Paul Sartre brilliantly describes “his hell,” in which there is neither executioner nor physical torture: “Hell is other people.”
