About this event

The Opéra Éclaté company presents La Vie de Bohème, a theatrical and musical adaptation of Puccini's opera, at the Odéon de Marseille on Thursday, December 3, Friday, December 4, and Saturday, December 5, 2026. Sung in French, this intimate version brings together nine young artists from theater, musical theater, and opera, in a production blending live music and theatrical emotion to explore youth and love. La Vie de Bohème comes to the Odéon de Marseille for three special evenings After a well-received run in Avignon and at several festivals during the summer of 2026, La Vie de Bohème begins its 2026–2028 national tour with a stop at the Odéon de Marseille, one of the city's most iconic stages. Three performances are scheduled for December 3, 4, and 5, 2026, giving Marseille audiences the chance to encounter a work deeply rooted in life and the streets. The Opéra Éclaté company, led by director Olivier Desbordes, offers an intimate, theatrical reinterpretation of Puccini's opera. The production is sung in French and uses a reduced musical ensemble, inspired by the Viennese café orchestras that adapted grand operas for chamber groups. Accordion, double bass, cello, and violin form the musical backbone of this stripped-down version, in which music becomes a natural part of the theater. This production is co-produced by the Opéra de Clermont, the Théâtre de Brunoy, and the Opéra de Marseille, grounding the show in Bouches-du-Rhône from the very first dates of its tour. The production brings Mimi and Rodolphe's story into dialogue with a contemporary reality: the AIDS epidemic, as a mirror of a universal experience—the moment when we understand that life takes on a different value once we realize it can end. Far from the conventions of the grand opera stage, this version of opera in Marseille is for everyone, newcomers and seasoned audiences alike, and is performed by nine versatile young artists who each also play an instrument. A young, talented cast brings a universal work to life The cast brings together artists with complementary backgrounds in opera, musical theater, and drama. Each person embodies a character while also playing an instrument on stage, creating a rare artistic unity. Here are the production's principal performers: Charlotte Ruby as Mimi Pauline Jolly as Musette Ulysse Mbenzu as Rodolphe Nicolas Hézelot as Marcel Simon Catrice as Schaunard Justin Domenicone as Colline Éric Allard-Jacquin on accordion Maëlise Parisot on double bass and cello Louise Ouvrard on violin The production is directed by Olivier Desbordes, assisted by Joan Brunet-Manquat, with musical arrangements by Mari Laurila-Lili, who is also the vocal coach. The lighting is designed by Clément Chébli and the costumes by Stella Croce. The libretto and dramaturgy were reworked jointly by Olivier Desbordes, Mari Laurila-Lili, and Joan Brunet-Manquat to give this adaptation theatrical coherence. The press enthusiastically praised the first performances this summer. La Provence notes that “the voices are superb, without ever trying to show off,” while Arts Culture Évasions describes “an original, vibrant, and contemporary production, led by a highly accomplished staging, in which theater, music, and opera singing respond to one another in beautiful harmony.” To continue exploring the region's operatic repertoire, you can also check out the program for Fleurette in Marseille, another musical show not to miss.
