Everything takes place far from Moscow, at the estate of old Sorine, a retired magistrate. His young nephew Konstantin lives there with him. He is in love with a pretty young woman, Nina, and dreams of literary glory. But his mother, the famous actress Arkadina, who refuses to grow old, leaves him to languish in the countryside without money. She lives the good life in the city, among horse-drawn carriages and telephones, and takes the illustrious naturalist writer Trigorin everywhere with her. Every summer, the couple comes to recuperate at Sorine’s. But that summer, Konstantin has written a Symbolist dramatic poem, and Nina is to perform it. A makeshift theatre has been built in the park, and the show will begin shortly.
