La Périchole is one of maître Jacques’s great vintages. Fresh, sparkling and wonderfully smooth. JACQUES OFFENBACH No successful end-of-year season without a good Offenbach from the back shelves! La Périchole is one of maître Jacques’s great vintages. Fresh, sparkling and wonderfully smooth. The opéra-bouffe is inspired by a comedy by Mérimée that Jean Renoir brought to the screen with Anna Magnani (The Golden Coach). La Périchole really existed; she was a famous actress and singer in Lima who became the mistress of the viceroy of Peru. No one knows whether her nickname meant “little marvel” or “native bitch.” It depended on the tone. Hortense Schneider, known as “Le Passage des princes,” ensured the work’s success. Later, Berganza and Crespin in turn sang “Ô mon cher amant,” “Ah quel dîner” and “Je t’adore brigand.” The sheer force of Éléonore Pancrazi, Marc Barrard and the young Kaëlig Boché is sure to make us forget all our troubles.
