Meet at the Museum of African, Oceanian and Amerindian Arts (MAAOA) for a workshop visit. Workshop visits to discover the museum’s collections in a fun way. Programme ► Saturday, July 11 at 10 a.m.: The MAAOA to Sketch Like illustrious artists before you, come learn sketching techniques using the museum’s collections. Ages 9 and up ► Saturday, July 18 at 10 a.m.: Masks on Parade in Mexico Discover Mexican festivities through the many masks displayed at the museum! Then create your own paper mask to become a jaguar, a peasant, or even an eagle warrior… Ages 6 and up ► Saturday, July 25 at 10 a.m.: Discovering Vanuatu Through the Vanuatu collections held at the MAAOA, you will discover this Oceanian archipelago, its history, its inhabitants, customs, beliefs and the richness of its artistic expression. During this workshop, you will make a paper puppet inspired by the temes nevimbur of Malekula Island in Vanuatu. Ages 6 and up ► Saturday, August 1 at 10 a.m.: Sandroing—Drawing in the Sand The inhabitants of the Vanuatu archipelago practice Sandroing: drawing in sand! Try out these precise techniques for creating symmetrical patterns to draw fruit, birds or the path of an ant. Ages 9 and up ► Saturday, August 22 at 10 a.m.: Three Dolls Make Rain or Shine This workshop visit will introduce you to the culture of the Hopi and Zuni of Colorado and New Mexico through their ritual dolls, the Kachinas. Ages 4 and up ► Saturday, August 29 at 10 a.m.: African Masks Discover the different uses and representations of masks from several peoples of the African continent. Then create your own paper mask inspired by those of the Marka, Dan or Pounou peoples… Ages 6 and up ► Saturday, September 5 at 10 a.m.: The MAAOA to Sketch Like illustrious artists before you, come learn sketching techniques using the museum’s collections. Ages 9 and up ► Saturday, September 12 at 10 a.m.: Alebrijes, Fantastic Creatures! Enter the fantastical world of Mexican artist Pedro Linares and try your hand at creating paper cutouts of his chimeras, known as alebrijes. Ages 3 and up ► Saturday, September 19 at 10 a.m. and Sunday, September 20 at 2:30 p.m.: Museum Experts Through workshops and games, get a glimpse behind the scenes at the Museum of African, Oceanian and Amerindian Arts! You will discover how a museum works, what professions exist there, and you can even step into the shoes of a museum professional for the duration of the activity! As part of the European Heritage Days Ages 8 and up ► Saturday, September 26 at 10 a.m.: The Art of Weighing Gold Dust Gold-dust weights look like figurines: you can make out an antelope, a sword, a horseman, fish… Formerly used by gold merchants in the Ashanti kingdom, located in present-day Ghana, these weights embody proverbs and provide a way to interact with a diverse clientele. Use them as inspiration to shape your own weights out of clay!
