Pense à saisir tes temps, quand un outil marchandise et dégrade le travail
As part of our series of discussion events on contemporary workplace issues and challenges, we will welcome Marion Beauvalet, Senior Lecturer in Management Sciences at IUT Bobigny.
About this event
Timesheets have a direct impact on how work is managed, both collectively and individually, particularly in professions considered autonomous, such as consulting and marketing. They also redefine the boundaries of managerial status. Drawing on a range of material—including interviews, analysis of company documents, online discussions and the DARES survey (2019 edition)—Marion Beauvalet examined in her doctoral thesis, defended in 2025, the effects of timesheets on professional practices and identities. Grounded in a critical theoretical framework drawing on Lukács (reification) and Braverman (the degradation of work), the analysis shows that these systems go beyond their simple technical function: they transform work activity, fuel disengagement and tensions, and appear as central instruments in the capitalist exploitation of labor.
At this discussion, our guest will address three questions in particular:
What effects do management tools have on managers’ work? What impact can they have on identity? How can we reclaim more positive practices?
Come and discuss these questions with us!
The session will be moderated by Lise Gastaldi, Senior Lecturer in Management Sciences at FEG and researcher at LEST.
This APSE discussion is organized in partnership with LEST, the GRH Master’s program at Aix-Marseille University (Faculty of Economics and Management) and the Institut Régional du Travail. It is also supported by the ArtLib collective at IMéRA (Institute for Advanced Study of Aix-Marseille University), the Coudes à coudes association and the Société Internationale d’Ergologie. This event is free and open to everyone. The discussion will also be streamed live by videoconference so that as many people as possible can take part (if attending remotely, please indicate this when registering).
