WORKSHOP CONTENT
The purpose of women’s* self-defense is to acquire ways to defend oneself, PREVENT assaults, become aware of one’s strength and regain or strengthen SELF-CONFIDENCE.
Taking the RIPOSTE workshop means:
- Encouraging yourself to FIGHT BACK in cases of harassment or assault, whether physical, verbal, psychological or sexual, by people close to you or strangers. - Practicing simple and effective PHYSICAL AND VERBAL TECHNIQUES through discussion, scenarios and role-playing. - Learning to PROTECT YOURSELF in a cooperative and welcoming atmosphere with other women (one instructor for a group of 10 to 16 participants). - ASSERTING YOURSELF in everyday life, feeling freer and more confident. - Focusing on what you CAN do, rather than what you cannot do. This form of self-defense is suitable for everyone, regardless of age or physical condition.
The instructors are certified in the RIPOSTE method, which grew out of the ACTION program taught in Quebec since 1984.
The Riposte method is based on principles of empowerment (taking or retaking power over one’s choices), solidarity among women and anti-oppression (combating sexist and racist discrimination, as well as discrimination related to disability, sexual orientation, transphobia, age, religion, language, educational level, social class…
- The workshop is designed for women (cis and trans) as a social category targeted by specific forms of assault. Some people assigned “female” at birth are questioning their gender or identify with “gender fluidity” or a non-binary identity. The workshop takes these different identities into account.
Workshops may also be offered in a specific form of chosen mixed-gender participation, to encourage peer exchange around a shared experience of discrimination.
Specific adaptations are possible in particular for participants who are:
- deaf or hard of hearing (in spoken French interpreted into French Sign Language) - living with a physical disability or disabling chronic illness - blind or visually impaired - living with a cognitive disability
If you are part of an organization, company or association and would like to organize a Riposte workshop—for professional training, volunteers, the public, in a school setting, etc.—

Organization: Association ARCAF Autodéfense et ressources pour le choix et l'autonomie des femmes
ARCAF organizes Riposte workshops on assault prevention, self-defense and empowerment for women and teenage girls. This form of self-defense is suitable for everyone, regardless of physical condition.
The ARCAF association was created in September 2013 in the Île-de-France region and has had a branch in Marseille since September 2018.
It aims to combat social inequalities and prevent and fight the various forms of violence and discrimination they cause, through a popular-education approach. The association works particularly to make visible and reduce inequalities between men and women and the specific assaults committed against women and girls.
The Riposte method actively seeks to improve women’s and girls’ confidence in their ability to defend themselves and reduce vulnerability by sharing appropriate tools and resources.
It is based on principles of empowerment (taking or retaking power over one’s choices), solidarity among women and anti-oppression (combating sexist and racist discrimination, as well as discrimination related to disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, religion, language, educational level, social class…)
The instructors were trained by instructors specializing in self-defense for women and teenage girls and are certified in the Riposte method, which grew out of the Action program of the Montreal Center for the Prevention of Assault.
